Opening of newly transformed George Street, Corby

Work on the transformation of George Street in Corby has now finished and the road will be officially opened at a ceremony on Monday, June 13 at 10am.

Northamptonshire County Council and Corby Borough Council, through North Northants Development Company (NNDC), secured funding to carry out the work.
The improvements complement the Willow Place shopping centre, new Corby East Midlands International Pool and Corby Cube development, carrying the theme of revitalisation throughout the length of George Street.

The principal aim of the scheme was to undertake improvements between Wescott Way roundabout and Alexandra Road roundabout with the changes creating a pedestrian-friendly environment to make walking along George Street more attractive.

Cllr Andre Gonzalez De Savage, county council cabinet member for Protective Services, Transport & Infrastructure, said: “This project has greatly transformed George Street and created a very attractive thoroughfare which links the newly revitalised town centre to the new swimming pool and Corby Cube.

“Corby is growing from strength to strength and this public investment in the town centre will help to further revitalise economic growth in the town and surrounding area.”

Corby Borough Council's lead member for Regeneration, Cllr Jimmy Noble, said: “We are very pleased to be opening the new and improved George Street to the public. The work carried out has really made a difference to the area and has been a key piece to the Parkland Gateway public realm.

“I would like to thank local businesses and the public for their patience whilst work was taking place and everyone involved in the project who have done all they can to carry out the work with minimal disruption - I'm sure we can all agree that the results are well worth it.”
